Editor:
On behalf of the Board of Trustees and the staff of the Byron-Brentwood-Knightsen Union Cemetery District, I would like to thank the various volunteer groups that helped this agency provide a proper Memorial Day celebration for the community.
I wish to thank the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Charles McCurtain Post 10789 in Brentwood for organizing and conducting the Monday service. Also helping with the service were Boy Scouts of America Troops 90 and 93, which helped with set-up, tear-down and parking; Cub Packs 121 Brentwood and 514 Discovery Bay, whose members acted as ushers; and the Liberty Union High School music department, which supplied the inspirational compositions for the ceremony.
Special thanks go to the United States Coast Guard for supplying a rescue and cargo plane to make a special fly-over at the close of the event.
It would be impossible to hold such an event without proper preparation. American Legion Post, Roy Frerich's Post 202 placed small flags on the graves of each known veteran, assisted by Cub Pack 514 of Discovery Bay, the Mt. Diablo Chapter of 4-H and other youth service organizations. The American Legion also is responsible for the maintenance of the Wall of Honor and the Avenue of the Flags.
Last but not least, the Young Men and Young Women's groups of the Church of Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints from all three Brentwood wards. This group for the past 15 years has cleaned the cemetery grounds in preparation of the Memorial Day services.
