When Mike and Vickie Fagan and their partners opened Black Bear Diner in March, it was a major boon for Oakley residents seeking a new sit-down restaurant in this culinary-deficient city. But the downside was that they closed their Fagan's restaurant in the Raley's shopping center, the only fine-dining establishment in Oakley.
Now Fagan's is back but under a new name: Delta Blues Sports Grill. It also has new owners: Jeff Pulido and his partner Shawn West, the son of Vickie Fagan and stepson of Mike. The restaurant, which held its grand opening June 20, is keeping the same menu (with the addition of a deep fryer) but adding several new features.
As the name suggests, the restaurant owners plan to host live blues and jazz music a couple nights a week and on Sunday a champagne jazz brunch. Along with professional performers they are hoping to get the guitar/vocal duo of Tuck and Patti they will hold jam sessions for school band members and others.
In keeping with the sports part of its name, the restaurant now provides three TVs that play all of the sports channels, and the walls display sports photos, jerseys and other memorabilia. Pulido and West encourage local sports teams and anglers to bring in photos to put up on the walls.
We want to give back to Oakley. That's our focus and goal here, said West. So it's not a bar; it's a family place. We do have the full bar and will do sports promotions in the evenings. It's a family fun place. We're open to suggestions from the public because we want to make this a home for the community here.
They also plan to tap into the local wine growers interested in holding wine tastings in the restaurant. And you'll be able to sip that wine or Fresca alfresco, as they plan to provide tables on the patio walkway area in front.
And the food?
We have always been known for excellent prime rib and pasta, said West, who used to be the head waiter at Fagan's. Everything is fresh; nothing is frozen. It's going to be the same menu. It's going to be Mike Fagan's homemade recipes. Some of the same cooks will be back. Mike will oversee things, that things are running smoothly. He's a huge hand in this.
