A team of topnotch restaurateurs is back in Discovery Bay, and invites the community to take a stroll on the Boardwalk. Chris Cookson, wife Erica, son Joey and a relatively new family member, Ali, age 2, have opened a new restaurant at the Marina, right next to the Yacht Club at the site of the former Bayside Bar and Grill.

Folks might remember when the Cooksons ran the Boardwalk Grill and Pizza Company in Brentwood's Liberty Link Center from 1996 to 2003. That operation was a popular hangout for pizza lovers and featured great sandwiches and soups.

This time around, Chris said, their new Boardwalk Grill operation won't offer pizza but will feature all the great food offered by the previous Boardwalk iteration and a whole lot more. In fact, scanning the wealth of delicious offerings for lunch and dinner will make your mouth water. Breakfast is on the way but will take a couple of weeks to get going.

We're concentrating on getting our menu and lunch/dinner operation running like we want it before we start serving breakfast, Chris said.

The Cooksons are sticklers when it comes to food quality, service and providing a nice dining ambiance. The restaurant can seat 64 diners inside and about 90 on the patio, which provides a beautiful view of the Discovery Bay Marina. Restaurant visitor boat slips are available, too.

Kelly and Stacey Chance happened by on their bicycles on opening day and found the Boardwalk Grill's food to be excellent. We had the barbecue chicken salad and a taco salad, Kelly said. The portions were large, the prices reasonable and the staff was friendly we're excited to have another quality restaurant to chose from in Discovery Bay.

Chris is just as happy as his customers with the way things are going so far. We've been surprised at how many people still recognize us from our Brentwood restaurant, and we've gotten a great response out here from folks who really enjoyed our food before.

Boardwalk Grill sandwiches are in the $8 to $9 range, while burgers go for about $6 to $8. Fish and chips is $12 and appetizers start at about $5. The menu is still a work in progress but already boasts 67 items, including a kids section, light offerings, pasta, grilled items like salmon florentine, a soup of the day and the ever-popular crab melt.

The Boardwalk Grill is located at 5879 Marina Road. The phone number 925-513-2499. Hours are from 11 a.m. every day to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and till 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
