Breeze through the entrance at The Big Kahuna Hawaiian BBQ and you're transported straight to the Big Island. The Big Kahuna himself, flashing the Hawaiian high sign, is pictured on the menu and painted on a surfboard that hangs to the left of the entrance.
The Big Kahuna of The Big Kahuna is owner Richard Lugo, who said the people of Discovery Bay have been wonderfully encouraging during the restaurant's construction, constantly expressing interest in when his shop would open. And fortunately for the lovers of Pacific cuisine, that time has come.
Everything at The Big Kahuna is priced low enough to appeal to tired commuters who would like to dine in, take out items or and this is different have them delivered right to their homes.
Specials include rice bowls with your choice of pork, beef, chow mein, chicken or seafood for $5.50. The highest priced item on the menu is Da Monsta Combo Beach Kabobs, consisting of beef, chicken and seafood for $10.50.
There are lots of appetizers pupus in Hawaiian such as Kahlua pork nachos ($4.50) or 10 pieces of fried won ton for only $4. Love seafood? How about grilled salmon for $7.50?
Kids haven't been forgotten at the Big Kahuna. They can order macaroni and cheese or a hot dog with chips, or perhaps spaghetti and meatballs all less than $4. Fountain drinks are just $2, and iced tea and bottled sodas are also available.
Former Union City residents Lugo, 58, and his wife, Antoinette, have lived in Discovery Bay for five years. Lugo said he has been involved with the food industry for many years and has cultivated a dream of opening a restaurant with items to favor the tastes of everyone salads for the ladies, heartier meals for guys and cool choices for keikis (kids). He said he has family members in Hawaii, which explains the Big Kahuna motif.
I want to please our customers every way I can, Lugo said. I want our patrons to become our friends by serving them the Hawaiian way by bringing the laid-back Islands to Discovery Bay.
