Take talented teen performers from Brentwood, Discovery Bay, Oakley and Antioch, mix in a dash of the most popular recording of 2007, add a splash of the latest dances, and what do you get? An event sure to tempt the taste buds of East County theatergoers, as The Kinsella Theater Group and Brentwood Teen Theater serve up one of the most popular teen shows in the country: Disney's High School Musical.

Not a typical coming-of-age story, the musical explores themes of personal commitment and fortitude, featuring songs that critique cliques, encourage growth, and affirm a greater good over self-reward. It is full of great songs for kids, both in message and melody, said director Steve Kinsella.

Choreographer Shellie McDowell has brought fresh dances to the fast-paced show, showcasing the talents of student actors from 11 East County schools, including Chelsea Barmore of Discovery Bay as Gabriel Montez, and James Parten of Antioch as basketball star Troy Bolton.

Showtimes are Friday and Saturday nights, Sept. 12, 13, 19 and 20 at 7:30 p.m., and Saturday, Sept. 20 at 3 p.m.

Performances take place in the multipurpose room at Resurrection Ministries 1275 Fairview Ave. (at Sand Creek) in Brentwood. General admission is $12; $10 for students and seniors (62 and up).
