One of East County's most familiar faces will no longer grace the many events she sponsored or attended with her husband, John Slatten. Carol Slatten, 78, passed away on the morning of Nov. 23, just four weeks after being diagnosed with a virulent form of cancer. The disease took her life in the company of loved ones and hospice attendants.

Born in Stockton to H.C. and Louis Day Clark, Slatten grew up in Knightsen and graduated from Liberty High School. The Rev. Nancy Monfort, manager of Interfaith Chaplaincy Services at Sutter Delta Medical Center, remembers Slatten as being an amazing person always interested in other people, their lives, trials and successes. She had a big heart and enjoyed sharing what she had with others.

Monfort recalled how Slatten helped fund a remodel of the Sutter Delta Medical Center chapel: She asked how much we needed to complete the renovation. I told her and she wrote a check to the Hospital Foundation earmarked for the chapel remodel project.

Carol was always willing to jump in with both feet to help. Slatten and Monfort met in 1976 on what was then the Slatten agricultural ranch, where they struck up a close friendship.

Slatten, along with her husband John, supported many causes and attended numerous charitable events. She was a past president of United Methodist Women at the Brentwood Methodist church, East Valley Service Club, East Contra Costa Historical Society, Oakley Women's Club, and a staunch supporter of Shepherd's Gate.

In recent years, Slatten was instrumental in organizing donor administration services for Sutter Delta Memorial Hospital Foundation and worked diligently every week writing thank-you notes to foundation donors. According to Rudeen Monte, Director of Philanthropy and Community Benefit for the foundation, Carol was a great volunteer. She always showed up on time and really contributed to our overall office systems.

Sutter Delta CEO Gary Rapaport confirms the impression: When Carol wasn't attending an event, she was hosting one to support one of her many causes. We will miss her dearly.

Married to John Slatten for 58 years, Carol is survived by her husband and two children. A daughter, Emily Slatten, is married to George Stewart of Antioch. A son, Charles Slatten, and daughter-in-law, Sheri, live in Byron. Carol has two grandchildren, Dana Slatten and Eric Slatten; three great-grandchildren, Tina, Angel and Shawn Slatten; a sister, Nancy MacRae of Carmichael; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Tom and Jan Slatten of Hollister; sister-in-law, Jackie Slatten of Danville; and several nieces and nephews.

The Slatten family is planning a memorial service, tentatively scheduled for the afternoon of Wednesday, Dec. 10 at the Lone Tree Golf Course Event Center, 4800 Golf Course Road in Antioch. Check a later edition of the Press to learn more specifics.
