If you meant to offer some holiday cheer to the troops overseas this Christmas but haven't had a chance to do it yet, you've just gained a little more time.
There's a school in Antioch that has kids writing notes as a class project and they needed a little more time, so we extended it for a week, said Trevor Frey, whose Support Matters program will now wrap up today, Friday, Dec. 12, so the packages can reach the troops by Christmas. It's been a lot of fun making this happen. Local businesses have helped out a lot.
Tammy Callahan of Delta Blue Star Moms, the group that has been collecting and packing the donations for shipment to the Middle East, said that although donations started out slowly, they've picked up of late.
We packed about 35 boxes last week, and we'll be packing the rest next weekend, she said, adding that she hopes to double that amount before it's over.
Donations have been left at each of the locations where barrels were left, and several reported that customers said they'd be returning with more this week.
It's a lot more than I expected, Frey said. It's been an honor to do this.
Items the troops have requested include cards and letters, new or used DVDs, single-serving drink mixes, beef or turkey jerky, batteries (AA, C and D) and duct tape. Donations may be left at any of the following locations until the close of business on Friday:
