The Salvation Army will soon begin distributing more than 600 food baskets and more than 10,000 toys to more than 600 families in East County. The organization reports that the items currently in short supply are turkeys and toys.
If the Salvation Army does not receive 300 additional turkeys, it will be forced to turn away many families this Christmas. The organization might also need to limit the toys distributed to just one toy per child instead of the traditional two.
Those wishing to donate new, unwrapped toys can deliver them to 525 E. 18th St. in Antioch. Toys for kids 3 through 10 are especially needed, as are dolls.
Gift cards for turkeys would be helpful, as those would make possible the purchase of turkeys only if needed, freeing up freezer space.
Last year the Salvation Army served nearly 600 families. As the need increases in our community, it is hoped that the support from caring individuals will also increase.
