Los Medanos College students Holly Dutra, right, and Nicole Warren presented Antioch Historical Society President Elizabeth Rimbault with a copy of the original petition written in Spanish for Rancho Los Medanos.
The petition was presented to the Mexican government by the Mesa brothers, who requested and received the land grant that extended from Shore Acres on the west to downtown Antioch.
The students are part of the Los Medanos Research Group that works with instructor Charlie Bohakel on a project to collect historical documents and maps pertaining to the rancho's history.
The documents will be housed in the new college library.
The research group is now affiliated with the Conference of California Historical Societies at the University of the Pacific in Stockton.
Each semester these young historians present copies of photographs or documents to the Antioch Historical Society Museum at 1500 W. Fourth St.
