It's been tough to be a golf course manager or superintendent in 2006.

Early in the year, you didn't need to look outside in the morning to check the weather. If it wasn't raining at the time, it had been raining during the night. Fairways became quagmires.

In July, temperatures consistently hit triple digits. If you didn't have an early tee time you could count on playing in record temperatures.

Many residents trying to keep their lawns green sympathized with golf course maintenance crews as they battled to keep the grass from turning brown.

The four courses along the Balfour Road corridor all are advertising discount golf as they attempt to make up for slow business due to this year's weather.

You can find deals at Roddy Ranch, Shadow Lakes, Deer Ridge and the Brentwood Golf Club.

GIRLS' JUNIOR GOLF

Deer Valley's Ashley Edwards continues to play in tough tournaments to prepare for the girls' golf program when the Bay Valley Athletic League play opens in about a month. The junior golfer qualified for a big tournament by shooting 75-77 at the Lake Merced course and headed to Charlotte, N.C. two weeks ago.

In the USGA Junior Girls Amateur, 156 golfers teed off for two rounds of medal play to try and qualify for the 64 spots open in match play. Edwards qualified and faced Isabelle Lendl, the 14-year-old daughter of tennis great Ivan Lendl. Isabelle eliminated Ashley 3 and 2 and went on to win two more matches.
