The City of Brentwood is conducting the second phase of the proactive Code Enforcement program. The second phase will address the storage of garbage and recycling carts, junk and debris in the front yard and storage of portable basketball hoops in the City right-of-way.

A 30-day educational period began Aug. 1 in an effort to educate residents about these common municipal code violations. A Code Enforcement Program brochure was mailed to all residents on April 1 and several articles have appeared in local newspapers as part of the public education campaign.

Code Enforcement Officers will begin canvassing the city on Sept. 1. Residents who have not voluntarily complied will be subject to citation. Residents may contact code enforcement staff at 516-5405 for questions about the proper storage of garbage and recycling carts, garbage and debris, or the storage of basketball hoops.

The city's slogan, "Put it away after garbage day" will be included on all new garbage/recycle containers. The Brentwood Municipal Code requires garbage/recycle containers to be: screened from public view (i.e., behind a fence or inside a garage); placed on the street not earlier than 24 hours before the designated time for collection, and removed from the public right-of-way by the customer not later than 24 hours after the designated time for collection. Further, all garbage/debris must be stored inside a garbage/recycle container while awaiting collection.

Chapter 12 of the Brentwood Municipal Code prohibits the storage of basketball hoops on the sidewalk, planter strip (area between the sidewalk and the street), or on the street. Basketball hoops obstruct the public right of way and are a potential hazard to pedestrians and vehicular traffic.

City staff encourages residents to take an active role in improving the appearance and safety of their neighborhoods, and maintaining their property values. Code Enforcement staff would like to thank the residents who have already voluntarily eliminated code violations on their property.
