The Liberty High boys varsity water polo team won the consolation final at last weekend's Newark Memorial Tournament.

The Lions lost 8-4 to Granada in the opening game but went on to beat Independence High 10-3 to advance to the consolation finals.

Senior captain Jamieson Bailey scored four goals for Liberty en route to its 10-6 victory over host Newark Memorial for the consolation title. Jacob Wood and Dane Russick each found the back of the net twice in that game while Danny Matteson and Jeff Schneider each scored once.

"That's the best we've done at that tournament in my four years of coaching here," said Liberty coach Jeff Ray. "We're really starting to come together."

Liberty is 0-1 in the Bay Valley Athletic League after falling to Ygnacio Valley last Wednesday on the road. The team's overall record stands at 3-4.

The Lions play their next home game Oct. 4 against Antioch at the Brentwood Family Aquatic Center.
