Deer Valley varsity football continued its dominant start to the 2006 season Friday, Sept. 15, when the Wolverines overran Granada in Livermore, 26-7.

The Wolverines never trailed the 0-2 Matadors, as running backs Sonni Woods and Taiwan Jones each turned in 100-plus-yard performances. Woods scored three of Deer Valley's four touchdowns on the day, with quarterback Tanner Renshaw adding the fourth and final touchdown on a 1-yard keeper late in the third quarter.

Woods dominated the first half for the Wolverines, tallying 110 of his 113 yards and scoring on 2- and 14-yard touchdown runs.

In the second half, Jones picked up where Woods left off, exploding for 122 yards on the ground after being held to a loss of three yards in the first half.

Deer Valley put a different spin on the ever-popular sports cliche "matador defense," putting the clamps on Granada after its first-quarter scoring drive, and holding the Matadors to less than 40 yards of total offense in the second half.

In its two wins this year, Deer Valley has outscored its opponents a whopping 59-13.

Deer Valley (2-0) hosts Castlemont (2-0) tonight in its final game before beginning its treacherous Bay Valley Athletic League schedule. The varsity game will begin at 7:30 p.m., following the conclusion of the JV game, which begins at 5 p.m.
