The officer was on routine patrol in the area of Ridgeview Drive in Antioch on Oct. 3 when a 57-year-old man apparently suffered a heart attack as he pulled his vehicle into the driveway in the 4900 block of Ridgeview Drive. A friend of the subject, Jane Baguis, noticed the officer driving through the area and flagged him down for assistance.
The officer was able to pull the man out of the vehicle and found he was not breathing and had no heartbeat. A second officer arrived to assist.
The officers had a department-issued Automated External Defibrillator (AED) with them. They began CPR and applied the AED, which delivered a shock to the victim. The victim's heart began beating again and he started breathing on his own. The officers continued to monitor the subject until fire and ambulance arrived to transport the subject to Sutter Delta's emergency room.
The City of Antioch has installed AEDs in city buildings and police patrol vehicles since March of 2005. This is the second life saved by the use of a department-issued AED.
