Soroptimist of East Contra Costa County is gearing up for its annual awards program and needs help from the public.

Nominees are needed for the service club's WOA, Women's Opportunity Award. Eligible applicants must be women who are the head of their household and provide the primary support for their family. They also must be enrolled in a vocational program or attending college to earn an undergraduate degree or are re-entering the workforce. Financial need must be demonstrated.

A winner will be selected by January and will receive a certificate and a check for $1,000. The winner will go on to compete at the district level with a regional winner chosen in March. Winners have the potential to win thousands of dollars.

The WOA program is a service project that helps women to improve their lives by giving them the resources they need to improve or finish their education and job skills, as well as enhance their employment prospects.

Funds from the award may be used to offset the cost of gaining a higher education, including tuition, books, childcare and transportation.

Applications are due by Dec. 15 and are available at Betty's Beauty Parlor on Oak Street or at East Bay Works on Maple Street in Brentwood. For more information, contact Dee Pruitt at 301-5488.
