The holiday season was officially welcomed last Friday night in Brentwood with the 25th annual lighting of the Christmas tree in City Park.

Area residents gathered around the 30-foot-tall tree on a crisp evening to watch outgoing Mayor Brian Swisher switch on the lights at about 7 p.m., and cheered when the lights went on. Both Swisher and Mayor-elect Bob Taylor spoke briefly before the lights were turned on.

Those attending the event enjoyed listening to Christmas carols sung by the Liberty High School choir. Coffee and hot chocolate were served - both of which were very much appreciated on the chilly night. Candy canes were handed out, which were a hit with the children who came to visit with Santa Claus. Mrs. Claus was on hand to take photos of the kids sitting on Santa's lap.

Many of those attending the ceremony wore hats and gloves and heavy coats. "This is pretty fun, but it's cold. I'm freezing," said Briana Fries, 13.

The line of children and their parents waiting to visit Santa stretched from the gazebo halfway across the park to the Christmas tree.

The event was sponsored by the Brentwood Advisory Neighborhood Committee (BANC) in conjunction with the Brentwood Parks and Recreation Department.

The next holiday happening will be Breakfast with Santa tomorrow at the Brentwood Community Center, 730 Third St.

Breakfast will be served at five different seatings beginning at 7:30 a.m. Mrs. Claus will be there again to take photos of children telling the jolly old elf what they want for Christmas. Cost is $5.51 for teenagers and adults, $3.31 for children 3 through 12. Advance registration is required. Call 516-5444.
