Congratulations to Paul and Rene Mayer, who live at 3329 Lookout Point in the Lake Shore area of Discovery Bay. Discovery Bay Garden Club judges chose their house for its curb appeal, creativity, design and maintenance. The judges were greeted by two entrepreneurs - Cody, 11, and Brandon, 7 (plus their dog, C.J.) - who had set up a lemonade stand and eyed the judges as prospective customers. Paul and Rene purchased their home two years ago. Rene said Paul designed his landscape and was undaunted by the small area he had to work with. She said he often compared his yard with the winner in the Discovery Bay Press. A lot of imagination and sweat equity went into this diminutive yard, which does not lack for any big-yard effects. Paul planted Queen, Pigmy and Sago palms, with statice, miniature philodendrums, Peter Pan Lilies of the Nile and Society Garlic at their base, with black volcanic rock ground cover. To the right of the home is a dry creek bed with Papyrus and Umbrella plants at its edge. Paul landscaped the 10-foot lawn as if it were an expanse of 50 feet. A Certificate of Appreciation was given and a sign placed in the Mayers' front yard proclaiming them Home of the Month winners. A gift card worth $25 in garden supplies was donated by the Village Nursery on Sunset in Brentwood. The November Home of the Month will be judged in the area around Point of Timber School. The Discovery Bay Garden Club is open to new members. Those interested may contact Gail Fritschle, Membership Chair, at 634-8659.
