The Discovery Bay Garden Club viewed the homes off Discovery Bay Boulevard, from Clipper to Sandpoint, and chose a home on Spinnaker Way (very visible from Discovery Bay Boulevard) as its Home of the Month for February.

The home is owned by Jim and Karen Spann, who moved to Discovery Bay 19 years ago. Oasis Landscaping designed the lighting, yard and landscape a little over two years ago, and this is the first time since the Spanns have lived here that the front yard did not need to be replanted every two years.

The walk and steps are flagstone and accent the dry creek bed that moves diagonally across the yard. Queen and sago palms are placed at the front of the house and birds of paradise are placed at their neighbor's border. Asparagus ferns have been trimmed into barrel shapes, and at first sight they appear to be rocks. Society garlic and decorative grasses dot the black background cover.

The Garden Club awards the winners with a certificate of recognition and places a sign in their front yard for one month proclaiming them the winner of the Home of the Month Program. The Village Nursery on Sunset Boulevard donates a $25 gift card to the winner. The next area to be judged is the waterfront on the west side of Discovery Bay Boulevard north of Sandpoint Road.
