The Liberty Union High School District has been notified by the California Department of Education that it has become one of the first High School Districts in California to emerge from Program Improvement.

The results of the revised 2006 Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) report indicate that Liberty Union High School District has met all 28 required components of the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Program. Students were required to meet federal standards of Percent Proficient and Participation Rate in English-Language Arts and Mathematics as assessed on the California High School Exit Examination. In addition, the district needed to achieve required targets in the Academic Performance Index and in the graduation rate of students.

This is the second consecutive year that Liberty Union High School District has met all requirements of the No Child Left Behind Program.

"We are extremely pleased with the academic gains in the last two years," said Superintendent Dan Smith. "It is a tribute to the leadership provided by our principals, the dedicated efforts of our teachers, the work of our support staff and the motivation of our students. The board of education has been steadfast in maintaining the district focus on improving academic rigor, providing individual support and increasing the achievement of all students."

In 2004-05, the district was identified as a Program Improvement (PI) district because it failed to meet one of the 28 criteria for two years.

The identification of the district as PI brought about many changes in the curriculum and instructional practices.

Courses such as English, Fundamentals, Intensified Algebra and Test Preparation courses were developed and provided for students.

Staff development activities targeted curriculum development and the improvement of instructional practices.
