"Everybody Loves Raymond" is a rerun favorite at our house. The saga of two generations living next door to one another is a television classic.

Raymond's mother, Marie, is the one my kids say I am most like. In one particularly funny and poignant episode, Marie explains to her grown children what it means to be a mother. Talking about love and consistency and never-ending patience, she ends with, "You just love them. You love them no matter what, and then you pray that someday, somehow, they'll remember how much pain they caused you."

I get Marie. In her own skewed way she is the ultimate mother. She understands what it means to be a parent, and knows that motherhood is about sacrifice, joy and a healthy dose of martyrdom.
