The turnout was just right for the opening of the cherry season last weekend, with bigger crowds and more ripe cherries expected in the coming weeks.

"We didn't want more than this," said Mark Maggiore at his cherry ranch on Walnut Boulevard as he surveyed a parking lot filled with 30 to 50 cars most of the day. "A lot of the crop isn't quite ready yet, but it will be next weekend and by Memorial Day. This is perfect."

Maggiore said his crop dodged a bullet from Mother Nature in the form of rain two weeks ago. Ripening cherries have a tendency to burst when they absorb precipitation, but the damage this time was averted by helicopters used to blow-dry the orchards.
