Ten fire engines and 50 personnel turned out to the Byron Hot Springs just before midnight June 26 to attack a blaze that had already fully engulfed an abandoned wood-frame building. Battalion Chief Brian Helmick said the cause of the blaze is still under investigation. Driven by 30 MPH winds, embers from the fire caused a few spot fires in the area and on the roof of the dilapidated brick building next door that was once the main hotel at the resort, but these were quickly extinguished. Crews from the East Contra Costa Fire Protection District and CalFire took part in the effort, which is being investigated by CalFire.
