Laurel Elementary's orange track students recently slid, splashed, slurped and sung their way into summer vacation.

The annual end-of-school party, put on with the help of nearly 70 parent volunteers, included a rock-climbing wall, three inflatable jump houses, giant slides and an assortment of carnival-themed games. Pizza, snow cones, popcorn and cotton candy rounded out the list of delectable delights.

"We wanted to do something special for the kids this year, especially since the DARE Program is no more," said Organizer Debbie Carlisle. "With DARE, they had a graduation ceremony, and so we wanted to mark it for them somehow. I think they really enjoyed it."

Karaoke Joe served as the day's official DJ, giving songbirds the opportunity to step up and be an American Idol. Fifth grader Rachel Carlisle said the karaoke machine was definitely the highlight of her day.

"I was kind of nervous at first," said Rachel, who sang two selections, including the popular "Hannah Montana" theme song. "But it was fun; a lot of fun. I also liked the climbing wall and the snow cones and cotton candy."

The event was paid for in part by donations from the Laurel Elementary PTA, local community sponsors and student donations. This year, the fifth graders got an extra special gift of free T-shirts and 2007 rubber bracelets to commemorate their graduation.
