Diablo Shores Lake in Knightsen hosted the Western Regional Barefoot Water Ski Championships July 27 and 28, drawing barefoot water skiers from all over the western United States.

Several records were set at the event, thanks in part to excellent water conditions, and local skiers made their mark in the competition.

Five local skiers excelled at the competition, combining to place in seven categories.

Andy Dreifort and Mike Tembly took first and second place in the Men's 4 Wake Slalom with scores of 11.1 and 9.4, respectively.

Tembly also earned a second-place finish in the Men's 4 Tricks competition with a score of 1,770.

Jerry Kanawyer claimed third place in both the Open Men's Wake Slalom and Open Men's Wake Tricks competitions with scores of 15.2 and 3,290.

Rich Peters earned a third-place finish in the Men's 5 Wake Slalom event with his score of 4.6, while his 4½-year-old son Richie took home third place in the Boom Entry Division, making him the youngest competitor to place in a barefoot tournament in the Western Region.
