For Melanie Dewey, esthetician and owner of Blush Day Spa and Salon in Antioch, helping her clients maintain a clean and clear complexion involves more than just a beauty treatment.

In early summer while giving a routine facial, Dewey noticed a red, irritated patch of skin on a client's nose and immediately recognized it as abnormal. The woman sought the advice of her doctor, who suggested it was "nothing," but upon seeing the patch again at another appointment, Dewey wasn't so sure.

"Most people would have thought it was a pimple or just a dry patch of skin, but I told her she needed to get a second opinion," Dewey said. "It just didn't look right."

A second opinion revealed the patch of skin was indeed skin cancer, which was removed immediately. The woman is now cancer-free and continues to receive regular skin treatments.

Dewey, whose commitment to health extends into her salon's organic line of beauty products and sanitary procedures, is celebrating the grand opening of Blush Day Spa and Salon on Aug. 18 with an art and wine charity event. All the proceeds will be donated to the American Cancer Society.

"I've always been interested in helping prevent cancer. Especially now, it seems that everyone is affected, either directly or they know someone who has it," Dewey said. "We use products that are more health conscious and try to help our clients live well."

The grand opening ceremony runs from noon to 4 p.m. and will feature food courtesy of Uno Chicago Grill, live music by The Marty Johnson Trio, wine, art for purchase by local artists, display booths by local vendors, and a raffle of various prizes.

In addition to the event's proceeds, a portion of all-day spa and salon service fees will also be donated to the ACS.

Formerly known as the Carol Carey Day Spa and Salon, Blush is located in the Deer Valley shopping center near Albertson's on Lone Tree Way. "We've actually been open for a year but during that time we kept the Carol Carey name. We recently got our new name - Blush - and that's when we decided to have our official grand opening," Dewey said.

Billed as a full-service day spa and salon, Dewey takes pride in the fact that hers is the only such business offering a variety of services for hair, nails, skin, and massage therapy.

"We're the only full-service salon in this area," she said. "While some salons will only do nails, skin care and massages, or just hair and nails, we provide our clients with all of the services they need under one roof instead of having to go to several different places."

Blush Day Spa and Salon is located at 4534 Lone Tree Way in Antioch. For more information about the grand opening event or services offered, call 777-1950 or visit www.salon-blush.com.
