Residents in possession of a U.S. flag in need of retirement are encouraged to deposit the flag in the new collection box outside Oakley City Hall.

The box was the idea of Eagle Scout and 2012 Freedom High School graduate Jake Hansen, who saw the need for a place to bring flags no longer fit to be flown or displayed. The sturdy security box is located near the Oakley City Hall flagpole.

The Scout approached City Manager Bryan Montgomery about the collection box as part of his scouting project for Troop 152. “It’s important retired or discarded flags be handled in a respectful manner,” said Hansen, 17, son of Kory and Tammy Hansen.

Troop 152 will maintain the box, collect the flags and dispose of them properly.

“It adds a valuable and useful asset to the Civic Center complex and Oakley community,” said Montgomery.
