Every so often a person of ordinary circumstances rises above the crowd and shines brightly for all of us to admire. Such is the case of Omar Bravo, a waiter at Sweeney’s Grill and Bar in downtown Brentwood. For the past seven years this young man from El Tuito, Mexico has served us cocktails and dinner with a graciousness and professional demeanor unmatched by any of his peers.
This is not just a job for tips for this young man; this is his profession and the diners are his clients and you know that immediately when you meet him. He greets you with a warm smile like he is genuinely happy to see you. He calls you by name and seats you at the best table available. He asks you if you would like a refreshment, remembering the name of your usual drink. His service is graceful with full attention to you and everyone in your party. He makes you feel special and – well, important.
No matter how busy he may be, how rushed the evening crowd, his service is prompt, and impeccable. It is no wonder that this young man was twice named waiter of the year in Brentwood. Livio, the former master waiter at Caps, would have been impressed with him.
Well, Omar is leaving. He is returning to his native land to fulfill a childhood dream to start a restaurant in Puerto Vallarta. The money is saved, his wife and family have already returned and he leaves soon. We will miss him, yes miss him sorely, but we wish him well.Via con Dios, Señor Omar, and buena suerte.
