While the world was fixated on the Olympics in London, four junior athletes from Antioch were putting on a show at a recent national event: the Amateur Athletic Union Junior Olympics in Houston.

Three of the competitors represented the East County Cheetahs, an Amateur Athletic Union track team that practices in Pittsburg. And earning the right to make the trip to Texas was no small feat. According to Cheetahs coach Cris Houston, “For all three, this is their first year in competitive track and field, making their accomplishments all the more impressive.”

Miles Duncan, 12, stole the show for the East County contingent, medaling in three events. He finished sixth in the 1500 meters in 4:48.77, seventh in the 800 meters with a time of 2:19.66 and eighth in the 400 meters.

Alonzo Floriolli, 12, finished 39th in the long jump with a final effort of 14 feet, 8.75 inches. Idanea Talbott, 13, the only female competitor from the East County Cheetahs to make the trip, finished 49th in the 1500 meters with a time of 6:02.07, 52nd in the discus throw with a final effort of 46 feet, 5 inches, 62nd in the 800 meters in 2:58.07 and 66th in the shot put with a final heave of 18 feet, 9.5 inches.

“All three have bright careers ahead of them in the sport,” Houston said.

After his success in Texas, Duncan went east, where he finished second in the 400 meters with a time of 57.15 at the Hershey’s National Track Meet in Pennsylvania.

Although not part of the East County Cheetahs, fellow Antioch resident Amarion Antonio, a 9-year-old student at Cornerstone Christian School in Antioch, also competed at the Junior Olympics.

Antonio finished 39th in the 800 meters and 46th in the 1500 meters against 68 and 81 competitors, respectively.
