You needn’t wait till December’s release of “The Hobbit” in motion picture form to enjoy a dramatization of J.R.R. Tolkien’s classic tale. For two weeks beginning Aug. 31, Liberty High School Playmakers will present a theatrical version of “The Hobbit,” directed by Helen Dixon.

The story follows the quest of hobbit Bilbo Baggins, 13 dwarves and the wizard Gandalf for the dwarf treasure stolen by the evil dragon Smaug in this prequel to Tolkien’s “Lord of the Rings” trilogy.

The production incorporates the use of masks and large puppets to bring a new theater experience to the community. “I’m always looking for new ways to challenge myself and my students,” said Dixon. “In the last several years I’ve been intrigued by the use of puppets in shows such as “The Lion King,’ “Avenue Q” “and War Horse” and wondered if we couldn’t do something in that vein. The cast and crew are excited and aware that this is a unique opportunity for high school students. They’re actively involved in the design and execution of the puppets and masks.”

The curtain goes up at the Allan E. Jones Performing Arts Center on the Liberty campus, 850 Second St. in Brentwood, on Aug. 31 and Sept. 1, 6, 7 at 7 p.m.; Sept. 1 and 8 at 2 p.m. Tickets will be available at the door or may be purchased online at www.libertyunion.schoolwires.net/playmakers.
