Kids in grades six through 12 are invited to learn how to write their names in Japanese, a style know as katakana, using traditional brushes and ink on Wednesday, Sept. 5 from 4 to 5:30 p.m.

Katakana was derived from the Chinese characters used by Buddhist monks to streamline Chinese texts in the ninth century. The result: any Japanese word can be written using Japanese alphabets without using characters. Katakana is still used for transcribing foreign words and names into Japanese.
