Mason Miller, a Project SEARCH member, recently joined Team Oakley as a facility maintenance intern.

Project SEARCH, a program sponsored by the Liberty Union High School District and Futures Explored, provides qualifying adult transition students opportunities that prepare them to enter the workforce and make the transition to future permanent jobs easier.

Earlier this month, Mason and a group of classmates visited City Hall for a tour. While other students asked about what new businesses were coming to Oakley, and whether or not the police cars are bullet proof, Mason restated his desire to work among Oakley staff, asking, “How do I get a job here?”

Miller applied at City Hall “because I wanted to help out my city and work where I live. It only takes me 15 minutes to walk to work. Plus, some of my previous classmates – Andrew, Everardo and Juan – had worked here before and enjoyed it.”

Andrew Hernandez has returned this semester to the Project SEARCH program and is working as a streets maintenance intern under Dave Newman’s supervision. Juan Villanuevo and Everardo Orozco worked as interns for the city in the spring semester, and this summer they were hired as temporary park-maintenance workers.

Miller will work under the supervision of Frank Zuno.
