The recent Delta Conservancy Cleanup Day saw teams of volunteers brave the prickly bushes, rocky shorelines and cold waters of Brannan Island State Park to capture and bag more than 1,500 pounds of trash.

The Land Team hauled away 135 pounds of trash. The Conservancy’s Water Team, volunteers from Snodgrass Solutions Inc., pulled out many large items, including three giant tires and half a boat. The Water Team’s haul weighed in at more than 1,400 pounds.

Pulling out an abandoned boat was a huge task for the Snodgrass Solutions team. Before the event, they made repairs to the boat so they could attempt to float it and drag it in. They also arranged clearance with the coast guard to haul it away.

Since several senior groups volunteer regularly to clean up Brannan Island State Park, Delta Conservancy volunteers found the beach relatively clean. Conservancy volunteers focused their cleanup efforts on climbing down the rocky banks. The park, now open year-round, welcomes any group willing to volunteer its services on the rocky banks. Those interested in an annual or bi-annual project should call Ted at 916-777-7705.
