Students from Vintage Parkway Elementary School in Oakley set sail recently aboard the tall ship Hawaiian Chieftain during its eight-day visit to East County. The crew cast off from Humphrey’s on the Delta on Marina Plaza in Antioch.

A replica of a turn-of-the-19th-century European merchant trader, the Chieftain offers walk-on tours and Adventure Sails for the public, plus hands-on history programs that expose elementary-age students to the rich tradition of exploration and trade on the West Coast. The living history experience includes demonstrations of tall ship handling, sea shanty singing, and maritime storytelling.

The Hawaiian Chieftain visits ports up and down the west coast every year, often accompanied by her sister ship, Lady Washington. To learn more about the educational and living history experiences they offer, or to see where the ships will be appearing, log on to www.historicalseaport.org.
