The Brentwood Library, 104 Oak St., offers weekly storytime sessions for three age groups: Lapsit Baby Storytime for children up to 2; Toddler Time for kids 2½ to 3½; and Picture Book Time for youngsters 3½ to 5. The following storytime schedule will be observed through Feb. 28.

In Lapsit Baby Storytime, held Thursdays at 10:30 a.m., small children and their caregivers learn easy fingerplays, bounces and songs, and enjoy colorful, engaging picture books. Early exposure to books and the spoken word assists brain development and encourages language skills, creativity and other abilities that benefit children throughout their lives. Even infants profit from these special sessions.

Toddler Time, offered Tuesdays and Thursdays at 11:30 a.m., introduces children and their caregivers to a wide variety of books and activities. Reading to children encourages a love of literature, and repetition of fingerplays and songs stimulates learning and focuses attention.

Picture Book Time, slated for Tuesdays at 1:30 p.m., reinforces important classroom skills such as attentiveness, interaction with an instructor and other children, and knowledge of simple concepts. At this age, children are beginning to refine their vocabulary, develop social skills and retain basic facts.

Those unable to attend a morning or afternoon program may participate in ongoing Pajama Time Storytime Monday nights at 7. Pajamas are encouraged.

No registration is required for Brentwood Library storytimes, and all programs are free. Storytimes take place in the seating area just inside the library’s front door.

School-age children and teens are invited to participate in Brentwood Library’s Winter Reading Program, which runs Jan. 14 to March 16. Participants can pick up a reading record at the library’s main desk and review three books to earn exciting prizes such as coupons for Mountain Mike’s Pizza and Rubio’s, or a free book. Prize giveaways begin Jan. 28. The program is made possible through support from Mountain Mike’s Pizza, Rubio’s, the Lions Club of Brentwood, and the Friends of the Brentwood Library.

In addition to weekly storytimes, the Brentwood Library offers a variety of free monthly programs for all ages. For more information, call 925-516-5290 or visit www.ccclib.org. The Brentwood Library is open Mondays through Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
