Our beloved mother, Betty May Blanche Richardson Carlton, passed away peacefully on Thursday, Nov. 29, 2012 in her home state of California. She was 90 years old.

She was born in Byron, Contra Costa County, Calif. on Aug. 24, 1922 to Lloyd Richardson and May Marybelle (Mae) Boyd Richardson. Betty had two older siblings: Jack Richardson and Irene Richardson Lone.

After putting herself through the University of the Pacific by working as a bookkeeper, she got her bachelor’s degree in religious education and was the treasurer for the Reedley United Methodist Church. She raised her three children and then returned to work in the office of Reedley Junior College until retirement.

She enjoyed her family, music, playing the organ and gardening. She was active in the Reedley Study and Civics Club, and she was also very actively involved in volunteering for numerous United Methodist Church projects.

She and Alan Carlton lived many years after retirement, traveling across the United States in their RV seeing the beauty of the U.S., visiting friends and their children. They were married 53 years.

Beginning in 2004, she moved closer to her son and family in Sacramento.

She was a beloved mother, grandmother, aunt and friend. She is survived by her three children: Sylvia Carlton-Cordaro, Alice Carlton and Arthur Carlton; grandchildren: Christine Cordaro, Barrett Carlton, Niles Carlton and Ann Carlton Shreeve; sister-in-law Joan Richardson; and niece Jackie Richardson Kontogianis.

The funeral service will be held Saturday, Jan. 26 at 1:30 p.m. in Byron United Methodist Church, 14671 Byron Highway. Rev. Joan Pell will be officiating. Burial will follow the funeral at 2:30 p.m. in Union Cemetery, 11545 Brentwood Blvd. in Brentwood. Light refreshments will be served after burial at Joan Richardson’s home. Directions will be available after the service. Sylvia Carlton is handling funeral arrangements.

She made a wonderful impression on family and acquaintances with her love of life and laughter. She will be missed but not forgotten.
