He was born on Sep. 29, 1948 in Antioch, the eldest of the six children of Samson and Victoria Viramontes. Ed grew up and attended Antioch schools, graduating in 1966 from Antioch High School. He had two sons: Edward Michael II and Richard.
Ed worked at U.S. Steel in Pittsburg as a sheet metal worker, following in his father’s footsteps. He was named after a family friend and well-known Bay Area attorney, Ed Balocco, but his close friends knew him as “Sweater,” a name he got in high school for the red sweater he loved to wear.
Ed came from a big Antioch family and especially enjoyed family reunions and get-togethers. He had many friends in the local area and liked to party with family and friends.
He is survived by his parents, Sam and Vicki; sons, Ed and Rich; grandsons, Anthony, Andrew and Ashton Viramontes; sisters, Regina and Vicki; brothers, Larry, Fred and David; and many Viramontes and Vela relatives. He is also survived by his goddaughter Rachel and companion Debbie Brooks.
A Celebration of Life service and brunch will be held Sunday, Jan. 27 at 1 p.m. in the Driftwood Yacht Club, 6346 Bridgehead Road in Oakley.
