“This is really a meat-and-potatoes community … people like to have their steak, tri-tip and chicken,” said Glen. “But I can pretty much do anything – all foods are possible.” While Glen caters primarily to large gatherings, especially weddings, he also practices his talents as a personal or in-house chef. His five part-time employees enable him to turn a client’s house into a restaurant for a day and allow the client to determine the menu.
“People are more comfortable in their own environment,” he said. “I try to give them everything they need.”
Cuisine on Location serves mainly Brentwood, but Glen has worked as far away as Oakland, Pinole – even San Francisco International Airport. “Wherever you are, I’ll go,” he said.
In addition to mobility, Glen’s operation features competitive prices. He’s been acquainted throughout his career to caterers who charge a fee to cut cakes or pop champagne corks. But Glen believes customers look for more value from a catering service.
“People often call in and tell me they’re on a strict budget,” he said. “And I want to try and help out. One time I catered for a woman whose husband had just lost his job and her daughter was about to get married. I talked with her, she agreed to cover the cost of the food, and I set up a payment plan that allowed her take care of the other costs over several months.”
On average, Glen caters to gatherings of 100 to 150 at a cost of $10 to 12 per person, and can serve as many as 1,500. Although most of the fare he prepares is traditional, he has responded to requests for more unusual dishes. “I had a guy from Australia ask me if I could cook kangaroo,” he said. “I’d never done this before, but I ended up serving kangaroo.”
Glen’s commitment to his customers helps spread the word about his business as much as the business itself spreads culinary enjoyment throughout the Bay Area.
“I think Glen is one of the nicest young men I have ever met,” said customer Gerry Smith, who has sought out Glen’s service for a memorial service and Christmas luncheon. “Every time I’ve had a function and can use his services, I do. He always does everything that’s requested.”
