Independence High 10th-grader Amata Abatch won third place in the recent CCC Poetry Out Loud competition held at Las Lomas High School. She competed against eight students from high schools in Contra Costa County.

Amata dazzled the audience with her fiery recitations of Denise Duhamel’s poem “Ego” and Emily Dickinson’s “I Felt a Funeral in My Brain.”

She and the first- and second-place winners will be recognized at an upcoming County Board of Supervisors meeting. The competition will be televised March 3 on CCTV.
