The Contra Costa County Fair is teaming up with local farmers, Farm Bureau leaders, farmers’ market managers and other local food and farming supporters to plan a fun, interactive exhibit at the fair to inform visitors about agriculture in Contra Costa County.

Local farmers, community-supported agriculture operators, farmers’ market managers, farm stand or U-Pick operators, vintners, olive oil purveyors and agricultural educators are invited to join in the planning process on Monday, March 4, from 6-8 p.m. at the County Fairgrounds, 1201 W. 10th St. in Antioch.

The idea behind the exhibit is to create an area where fair-goers can learn about local agriculture, local farmers’ markets and farm stands, see demonstrations and meet local farmers. Fair-goers will be able to sign up for a community-sponsored agriculture program and taste local specialties. The exhibit will also feature giveaways and hands-on activities for kids. The one-stop area will make learning about local agriculture informative and fun.

“We’re excited to be able to use the Contra Costa County Fair to showcase local agriculture,” said Robert Williamson, CEO of the Contra Costa County Fairgrounds. “Our farmers and local commodities are a critical part of our community, and we welcome the opportunities and partnerships this new exhibit will create.”

In addition to partnering with local farmers and the agriculture community, the fair is partnering with the UC Small Farm Program and the California Department of Food & Agriculture (CDFA) Division of Fairs & Expositions to make the exhibit available to the public.

The 2013 Contra Costa County Fair is held May 30-June 2. For information, visit www.contracostafair.com or call 925-757-4400.
