Last year it was estimated that close to 1.5 million new cancer cases would occur in the United States, according to the American Cancer Society. Those statistics are mind boggling to some, but for those suffering from cancer, they are a reality. In order to support the research for a cure for cancer, dressbarn is continuing its annual participation as an American Cancer Society Relay for Life National Corporate Team Program member for 2009.

Relay For Life is the largest global cancer-fighting movement that unites communities across the world to raise awareness and funds to support the American Cancer Society’s research and programs. In addition to the company’s sales associate and community involvement in the Relay for Life events nationwide, dressbarn locations in the Brentwood area are introducing a Heart Bracelet to raise funds for the American Cancer Society. The bracelets will be sold for $5 at all dressbarn stores from May 1 through Aug. 31, or while supplies last. Dressbarn will contribute the entire net profit of $2.50 to the American Cancer Society.

“This is our way of supporting all of those brave men and women who are dealing with the hardships of cancer,” said Vivian Behrens, senior vice president and chief marketing officer of dressbarn, inc. “At dressbarn, we believe people come first, and it is important to embrace organizations like the American Cancer Society, who go above and beyond in their efforts. Community organizations such as the American Cancer Society have a strong impact on our customers, associates and their families. And we are happy to involve the Brentwood-area community in this very important effort.”

This year, more than 5,500 Relay for Life events will be held across the country, in addition to Relay for Life events in 19 countries around the world. Teams will gather at schools, fairgrounds or parks and take turns walking or running laps to fight back against cancer. In 2008, more than 250 dressbarn inc. teams, comprised of customers, executives and store associates, participated in Relay For Life events and raised nearly $700,000 through team fundraising, in-store promotions and the dressbarn inc. Foundation donation. To date, dressbarn, inc. has given $5 million to the American Cancer Society to support local and national cancer initiatives.

“We are proud to say that we’ve worked closely with the American Cancer Society since 2002, and we are determined to continue to raise the bar for participation and contributions moving forward,” said dressbarn President and CEO David R. Jaffe. “We expect to exceed last year’s turnout in community member support and dollars donated to the society through the sales of our Heart Bracelet and the dressbarn locations participating in this year’s events.”

The American Cancer Society is the nationwide community-based voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem. Its goals are simply stated for such an important cause: to prevent cancer, save lives and diminish suffering from cancer. Relay For Life brings the American Cancer Society one step closer to attaining its goals through a 24-hour event to raise money for medical research and programs.
