Independence High School student Meghan Groshong was recognized recently at a Liberty Union High School District Board meeting as an Outstanding Student and a wonderful young lady. Independence teacher Mrs. Crum introduced Meghan as “one of the most brilliant and motivated students” she has ever seen. Groshong earned a place on the Principal’s Honor Roll for four semesters, completed 10 Los Medanos College courses with nearly a 4.0 grade point average, and attained perfect scores on both the math and English sections of the California High School Exit Exams.

Groshong has won numerous awards during her years at Independence, including the Annual Essay Contest, Lions Club Speech Contest, and Poetry Out Loud Contest. She also attended Oakland Children’s Hospital summer internship program last year.

Although an illness has played a large role in her life, Groshong has not allowed that to deter her from the high goals she has set for herself. When asked about her motivation and perseverance, she said, “Mrs. Crum has brought many opportunities to me, which is why I’m involved in so many activities. The school is like a family, and they give us a little nudge when we need it. They’re the best.”

Groshong’s goals are to graduate from high school, study medicine at a four-year university and become a pediatrician.
