Antioch urges water cuts

California is experiencing a third consecutive year of sub-normal rainfall, and reductions in water supply are expected state-wide. Despite recent storms, California water supplies are still below average.

The City of Antioch purchases water from Contra Costa Water District (CCWD), and has been notified of a decrease in available water this year. The district is working with municipal customers to implement a 15-percent water-reduction goal.

Residential, multi-family, business and irrigation customers are asked to voluntarily reduce the amount of water by 15 percent; industrial customers by 5 percent.

Reductions can be achieved primarily by irrigating less frequently and by an overall reduction in outside water use. The city recognizes the conservation measures customers have made to date, and anticipates the ability to meet its overall 15-percent-reduction goal. Customers who continuously fail to meet these voluntary reduction goals, however, might have a flow restrictor installed on their meter and be subject to an excess-use charge.

I urge not to force vegetable gardeners to use less water. Since gardeners will not be buying vegetables from wasteful commerical farmers, it is only fair that they be allowed to use water since farmers will be using less water ..
