For the first time in 25 years, The Discovery Bay Wine, Art & Boat Show will be a no-show, and organizers are blaming a tepid economy and a lack of consumer confidence for the cancellation of the popular weekend event.

“Well, I think it’s a sign of the times,” said Amanda Dove, an organizer of the Lions Club event. “We had plenty of sponsors to put on the show, but didn’t feel like we had enough exhibitors to the extent that we usually do. We really fought hard to make it happen, but we just couldn’t do it. But we’ll bring it back next year, and we’ll do it with a bang.”

Although the show – scheduled for May 15 and 16 – has been postponed, local merchants on the boardwalk invite the public to visit their shops both days from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. to enjoy a 20-percent discount.

Similarly, the traditional Rally Round the Lake, a 5K run also sponsored by the Discovery Bay Lions Club, is being postponed this year. Normally held the same weekend as the Wine, Art & Boat show, this year’s event will take place in October, according to Dove.
