A Discovery Bay live-in caretaker has been arrested on charges of elder abuse following the death of a man and the hospitalization of his wife for heat-related symptoms.

George Brim, 90, was found dead July 18 in the upstairs bedroom of his home, located in the 1200 block of Discovery Bay Boulevard. His wife Shirley, 85, was taken to the hospital for heat-related symptoms.

Laarni Dime, 57, was arrested by the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office and booked into the county jail, where she remains on $100,000 bail.

Sheriff’s deputies were called to the scene about 11:15 p.m. following an emergency call by Dime that the man was not breathing.

According to Sheriff’s Spokesman Jimmy Lee, triple-digit temperatures over the weekend might have contributed to the death.

“It was pretty warm in there,” said Lee. “You can just imagine how hot an upstairs bedroom can be. Right now everyone is just trying to sort out what happened, and it will take some time before we know anything for sure.”

An autopsy was performed, but the cause of death is pending the return of toxicology reports.
