If you drive along Highway 4 from Brentwood to Oakley, chances are you’ve seen the sign in front of Green Leaves Church of God that reads: “If God had a refrigerator, would your picture be on it?” It’s an insightful matter to ponder, but the real question might be, if God had a refrigerator, what would He keep inside?

Can’t decide what movie to see this weekend? No problem – just consult the Nacho Lady. Also known as Mary Romick, the former first lady of Oakley posts movie reviews on her husband’s blog each week, awarding nachos instead of stars to rate the latest movies. The Nacho Lady, who delivers blunt reviews and minces no words about movies not worth your time, enjoyed the new Harry Potter movie, but suggests renting it rather than dishing out the cash to see it at the theater. Instead, she recommends “Up” or “The Taking of Pelham 123.” But whatever you do, don’t see “Bruno.” The Nacho Lady didn’t even give it a jalapeño. Details are still being worked out, but if you live in Discovery Bay, you’ll want to set aside the afternoon of Aug. 27. That’s when there’ll be a grand opening of the Discovery Bay Sheriff’s Annex, featuring … well, like we said, the details are still being worked out. What’s known is that the Sheriff’s Office will invite the CSD, Supervisor Mary Piepho, and the Chamber of Commerce to help sponsor the event, and the town’s very own deputies (doesn’t that sound good?) Bryan Michaud and Mark Spaulding will be present, along with Crime Prevention Officer Tony Fontenot. Keep your eyes on the Press for more details.

Joan Buchanan, who promotes herself as the “The Education Candidate,” made a cameo at last weekend’s Friends of Oakley Chili Cook-off, but it was her campaign team that took the spotlight. Oakley’s Darren Scholtman took top prize at the event, which raised more than $4,600 for additional instructional supplies for teachers in the Oakley Union School District, but Buchanan’s team wasn’t far behind in third place. Buchanan said she was proud of her team, especially since she didn’t know they knew how to cook. While third place will do for the cook-off, the team had better bring its A game for the election in September.
