Owners Robin and Dan Jolivette have been serving tasty treats at their yogurt shop since August, but their menu is expanding. What started as a frozen yogurt haven has evolved into a snack shop that has Brentwood buzzing.
“We haven’t had a grand opening yet because we are learning as we go,” said Robin. “We’re holding off until we find our place. The idea has always been to serve yogurt and treats, and we’re slowly defining the types of treat we’ll sell. We started off with yogurt, but now we sell nachos and hot dogs, too. In the winter, we’d like to see soup and we’re thinking about adding pie as well.”
While the hot and savory items set Scrumdillyumptious apart from other yogurt establishments that have cropped up in the past year in far East County, the yogurt itself is quite unique. Of course, you may order standard chocolate or vanilla or seasonal flavors such as pumpkin, but Scrumdillyumptious offers “flavor blast,” a technique that infuses additional flavors into vanilla yogurt.
For example, you could order a vanilla yogurt with black cherry, green apple or blue raspberry. Mango, banana, caramel, peanut butter, and butterscotch are available, too. You may mix and match to your heart’s content, or try all eight flavors and join the “All 8” club of patrons who have sampled the ultimate flavor blast experience. At press time, 103 people have tried the “All 8” and Dan said everyone has enjoyed it, so much so that some come back and try it again.
“People really like it because it’s different,” he said. “You may not think all those flavors will go well together, but it comes together nicely. Everyone who has tried has liked it. No one has sent it back.”
Six flavors are served daily at Scrumdillyumptious, including sugar free and non-dairy options, but the flavors rotate about every other day. The flavor blast’s core eight flavors will be changed about every two months. But if all the flavor options were to stay the same, you could experience something new each time.
Katelyn Tobar, a senior at Liberty High School, comes to Scrumdillyumptious every week and sticks with her favorite: vanilla yogurt topped with almonds. “I love this place,” she said. “It feels like home, and I know that when I come back to Brentwood after I go to college, I’ll be coming back here every time I’m home. It’s just that good. It’s hard to resist.”
Felix Navarro, also a senior at Liberty, agreed: “This yogurt is amazing. My friends told me about this place, and we came by one time after school – and that was it. I’m hooked. Try it once and you’re hooked. They’ve even got hot dogs now. There’s something to fit every mood.
“Plus the owners are amazing people. It’s really nice to come here and just hang out. You can come in here and chat with them. They’re so nice and easy to talk to. They make you feel so welcome. It really is like a home away from home.”
Robin said she’s touched by how welcoming and supportive people have been since they opened. In return, Scrumdillyumptious has hosted a series of fundraisers for local schools. On select days, if customers bring in a flyer or say they’re supporting a particular school, Scrumdillyumptious will donate 20 percent of the profits to the school.
“We want to give back,” Robin said. “We want to be involved in the community. We love Brentwood and the charm of downtown and we want to be a part of its revival. We live six blocks away so it really is a home away from home, and it’s such a wonderful feeling to know that other people feel the same way.”
