Deer Valley’s football team avoided a letdown Friday from an emotional win the previous week against Pittsburg, crushing Liberty 69-6.

The Wolverines put together an opening four-play, 53-yard drive capped off with a 13-yard touchdown run by Damon Collins. Liberty’s second three-and-out was followed by another Deer Valley four-play scoring drive in which two touchdowns were nullified by penalties. The Wolverines found the end zone, however, on a four-yard touchdown run by Collins.

A Liberty fumble gave Deer Valley the ball on the Lion 32-yard line. Four plays later, Brandon Williams ran it in from six yards out. Another Liberty three-and-out gave Deer Valley the ball at the Liberty 43. Three plays later, Kristoff Williams connected with Brandon Williams on a 40-yard touchdown pass, and Julio Villegas’ fourth PAT gave Deer Valley a 28-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

And so it went the rest of the game. If there were a mercy rule in high school football, it surely would have been invoked to spare the Lions the next 45 minutes – and 41 more points by Deer Valley.

Liberty was finally able to muster some offense in the fourth quarter on an 89-yard scoring drive featuring a 44-yard pass from Devyn Parsons to Anthonee Garcia, allowing the Lions to cross midfield for the first time. A 12-yard pass from Parsons to Garrett Slocum finally put the Lions on the board. The two-point conversion failed, however, and the Wolverines led 63-6 with nine minutes remaining.

Deer Valley Coach Rich Woods was pleased with the easy victory. “There is not much to say. The kids played well and hard,” he said. “We went back to basics this week, just kind of tried to regroup. We ran a lot of basic offense. We tried to play well up front.”

Liberty Coach Nate Smith echoed those sentiments: “It starts up front. I thought we did a better job of trying to be physical tonight. Their (defensive) closing speed all night was great. We had holes tonight that we haven’t had the last two weeks. When we start to hit those holes and their safeties are making tackles two holes deep, that’s hard to prepare for.”

Deer Valley (8-0, 3-0) takes on cross-town rival Antioch (4-4, 2-1) Friday. “Antioch is a good football team,” said Woods. “They feel like they have a piece of the league championship if they beat us. From here on out, we’re the team that everyone is trying to beat.” Liberty (3-4-1, 0-3) will host Pittsburg (4-4, 2-1).
