Monta Vista’s 4-3 victory over Saratoga was aided by the withdrawal of Saratoga’s top player, Mika Padmanabhan. After losing her second service game to Sylvia Li and trailing 0-4 in the first set, Padmanabhan looked listless and complained of dizziness as the players came to the bench for a break. “This is ridiculous. I can’t do anything,” she said before lying down on her back on the court.
Li, who had beaten Padmanabhan twice in league play but lost to her in the Central Coast Section (CCS) playoffs, was disappointed afterward. “I was really looking forward to this match,” she said. “The last time I lost I played really badly. I was looking for revenge. I was really hoping we could finish.”
Monta Vista is located in Cupertino, just a short drive up Highway 85 from Saratoga, so there’s a strong rivalry between the two schools.
