Snow camping 101 Thursday, Dec. 10, 7 p.m.

Imagine the fun of a day spent backcountry skiing or snowshoeing; it doesn’t need to end as the sun gets low. An REI snow-camping specialist will show you how enjoyable snow camping can be – when you have the right gear and know-how. Learn about tents, snow shelters and sleeping bags/pads. Find out how to select and set up camp, layer your clothing for maximum warmth, cook nutritious meals and stay properly hydrated. An experienced leader from the Sierra Club’s Snow Camping Section will share information about the section’s popular field training series, now in its 41st year.

Search and rescue professional Leah Waarvik knows from firsthand experience how important it is for families to be prepared when they head out camping and hiking in wilderness areas. As a member of Alameda County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue unit and California Rescue Dog Association, she works with her rescue dog Emma to help find people who need to be rescued in the backcountry. Join Waarvik and Emma as Waarvik shares her adventures and autographs her children’s book, “I Sit and Stay: A Survival Guide for Kids” (and parents, too).

Easy turns, better grip, smooth glide – these are just a few of the benefits you’ll experience when your skis/snowboard are properly tuned and waxed.
