You can always figure that where there’s smoke, there’s fire, but in the case of Harvest Park Bowl on Super Bowl Sunday, there was also a whole lot of good eatin’.
The event was the ninth annual Brentwood Barbecue King Cook-off, which this year attracted 13 chefs and raised more than $4,000 for the Brentwood Police Activities League and the East Contra Costa Historical Society.
“It used to be baseball, hot dogs and apple pie, but not now,” said Bill Fremantle as he watched Gorilla Rilla pose for pictures with eager youngsters. “Now Super Bowl, barbecue and chili is what America loves.”
People with sticky fingers, sauce-stained chins and satisfied smiles packed the bowling center as the winners were announced in five categories, which for the first time included chili. The Brentwood Barbecue King title went to Kris McCullough, son of a former Barbecue King.
“I’m just a backyard griller,” McCullough said, although he added that his special mix of rubs and sauces would remain a secret. “I just came here for the fun.” Living up to his word, McCullough donated his cash winnings back to the cause, as did several of the winners.
The biggest day, however, was had by Chuck and Cindy Collendrez. The Brentwood couple grabbed second place for ribs, third place for chicken, tied for first in chili, and got first place for dessert. Overall, the cookin’ Collendrezes earned a second place in the Barbecue King competition. (Points for dessert and chili did not count toward the title.)
The top finishers in the 2010 Brentwood Barbecue King Cook-off, listed first, second and third, were:
Rib category: Kris McCullough, Chuck and Cindy Collondrez, and Greg Ferrel. Chicken: Jack Simmons, Mike and Teresa Berry, and Chuck and Cindy Collondrez.
